Research Support Specialist I - College of Arts & Sciences - Molecular Biology and Genetics - Bravo Nunez Lab

The lab of Maria Angelica Bravo Nunez in the Department of Molecular and Genetics focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms and evolution of chromosome segregation in human fungal pathogens and model yeasts. Her research uses interdisciplinary approaches to answer fundamental questions in chromosome segregation using genetics, evolutionary, biochemistry, and genomics.

The position is located within the department of Molecular Biology and Genetics. The research support specialist with assist in the planning, designing, implementing, conducting, and analyzing experiments and/or research projects according to plan. Assist in preparing research reports and papers and reviewing research literature. Assist with preliminary grant proposals. Provide advice and instruction in the routine use of the equipment and laboratory techniques. Oversee purchasing and procure non-routine equipment and materials; ensuring that materials and equipment inventories are adequate. Maintain and schedule the general maintenance of equipment and inventory records.

Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols. Complete training on lab safety and proper handling of chemicals as required by CALS EHS. Implement appropriate laboratory safety and waste disposal protocols for compliance.

This is a full-time position. This is a one-year term appointment with the possibility of extension contingent on successful performance and continued funding.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree and 2 to 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Prior experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Prior knowledge of safety protocols in a lab setting and proper waste handling.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and written with faculty, staff and students.
  • Familiar with basic molecular biological, cell biological, and biochemical techniques.
  • Must be adaptable and self-motivated, and able to quickly acquire and apply new skills independently.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively within a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related subject.
